Before we go into that, let’s get you introduced.

Welcome Emily

This is Emily
Introducing Emily & Storm

Tell us a bit about yourself…

I’m Emily,

A 16-year-old showjumper from the south of England. I ride a 10year old, 15.2hh Connemara x thoroughbred called Storm. Currently competing up to 85cm and schooling up to 105ish in lessons and clinics. We both love cross country and we are hoping to do some one-day events this year.

One of our challenges is to try stepping up to 90cm, maybe even 95cm out show jumping!

Where it all began

I first sat on a horse at just a few months old. My mum grew up with horses as her mum was Lord Mountbatten’s groom.

My love for horses just grew from the first time I sat on one. I started riding my mum’s old Shetland, the nice one, when I was 2 years old. Mainly rode a few other ponies from our yard whilst I was growing up. It was when I was around 6/7 years old that my parents bought me my first pony called Spike. Spike was awesome but we just happy hacked.

By the time I was 10, Spike was getting older, so we went and viewed a little grey New Forest pony called Roo. We fell in love with him, bought him that night and he became my all-rounder for the next 4 and a half years. I started jumping and properly riding when I got Roo, having a few lessons, doing some showing and jumping. Roo took me from not jumping to jumping 90cm, over fillers, cross country jumps, doing my first shows and fun rides

My mum bought Storm in January 2020. She also bought her on throughout the rest of the year, teaching her the basics and how to jump. I grew so quickly that  I took on Storm in December of the same year. Storm totally transformed both myself and my riding. We started competing regularly, coming home with lots of placings, she’s a speed machine when it comes to jumping. Making huge strides, we have taken part in all kinds of lessons and clinics, jumping levels I never could’ve dreamed of jumping!

She’s totally awesome!!

We’ve even recently qualified for Hickstead Sunshine Tour!

Aims for the future

I’d like to step up a height or two, perhaps to 95cm when show jumping. I would also like to do a few one-day events and hunter trials over the course of this year. I’m going to Sparsholt to do equine studies for college so would like to take Storm to some competitions at Sparsholt in preparation for the Sunshine Tour at Hickstead. I would also like to take Storm out to try different cross-country schooling and fun ride venues.

Away from competing I like to do the normal things like hack and go on beach rides with my best friend Katie and her pony, just enjoying myself.

Charlotte Dujardin.

She came from nothing, her parents weren’t horsey and now she’s an Olympian. she’s such an amazing rider and she’s so inspiring as she’s just super down to earth and she did all the work herself to get to the position she’s in.

Moving forward

You’ve now found out a little bit about Emily, in her own words. When we asked about her inspirations we did ask “with the exception of your Mum”. We feel it only fair that we highlight this, as it is quite clear her Mum had, and continues to play, a massive role in the progress and development. Well done Mum!

We are very happy that Emily has kindly agreed to let us follow her around for the coming year. She will be providing us regular updates so that we can keep you informed of her progress. We hope that you will get involved and cheer her on too.
