European Championships

It’s the European Championships this month.

Showjumping, Dressage and Eventing teams will be competing to be named the best in Europe.

The busy period gets underway in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on the 19th August and will conclude on the 25th. The Showjumping and Dressage competitions taking place at the same venue, both with great squads representing GB.


The official FEI competitors list shows Team GB have a very strong squad going over for the jumping. Aside from Team and individual goals, the other mission of course is to try and secure Olympic qualification for Tokyo 2020. The following will compete alongside Centaur ambassador Scott Brash for Great Britain;

  • Scott Brash – Hello M’Lady
  • Amanda Derbyshire – Luibanta BH
  • Ben Maher – Explosion W
  • Laura Renwick – Dublin V
  • Holly Smith – Hearts Destiny

Di Lampard, performance manager, had this to say in a recent interview;

“The European Championships this year are absolutely crucial if we are to qualify for the Olympic Games in Tokyo next year.  I have full faith that the selection panel have put together a very strong team who could not only secure a qualifying ticket for Tokyo, but also medal in both the team and individual finals. 

“I would like to personally thank all the owners that have made their horses available and, of course, the riders who are as committed as I am to delivering for Great Britain. In addition I extend my thanks to the dedicated support team at the BEF and British Showjumping who also play a vital role.”

The Dressage competition, featuring our very own Charlotte Dujardin on Mount St John Freestyle, also has a stellar squad;

  • Carl Hester – Hawtins Delicato
  • Charlotte Dujardin – Mount St John Freestyle
  • Charlotte Fry – Dark Legend
  • Gareth Hughes – Classic Briolinca

Richard Davison and Lara Butler are the reserves.


The Eventers have to wait a little longer for their chance to impress, starting on 28th August and ending on 1st September in Luhmühlen.

Badminton winner Piggy French, will be surrounded by a team of riders used to dining at the top table.

“I am very excited about the squad selection, which includes four senior gold medallists from recent championships. It allows Team GBR to be competitive while still investing in the future, with several horses receiving their first team call-up. While Tokyo 2020 qualification is already secured, this European Championships is an important part of our Olympic preparations, so I’d like to thank all the riders and their owners for making their horses available for selection.” The words of performance manager Dickie Waygood.

  • Kitty King – Vendredl Blats
  • Tom McEwen – Toledo de Kerser
  • Oliver Townend – Cooley Master Class
